Long-finned Pilot Whale

The Long-finned Pilot Whale belongs to the dolphin family despite its name. The term Long-finned describes the physical appearance of its fins which are longer than its close cousin, the Short-finned Pilot Whale.

The scientific name of the Long-Finned Pilot whale is Globicephala melaena. Globicephala refers to the roundness of its head. This dolphin specie feeds mainly itself on cephalopods and cod.

The size of this dolphin specie is ranging from medium to large. Its length can go from 5.5 up to 8.5 meters long. Its weight varies from 3 to 3.5 tons. This type of dolphin is common around the world as it can be observed during a dolphin watching tour in all oceans but the Pacific.
