Short-finned Pilot Whale

The Short-finned Pilot Whale is not a whale but belongs in fact to the dolphin family. Its name describes well its appearance as it has shorter fins than its close cousin, the Long-finned Pilot Whale.

Contrary to its cousin, the Short-finned Pilot Whale is quite large but it is still smaller then the Long-finned Pilot Whale. Its length ranges from 4 up to 4.5 meters long. Its weight can reach up to 2.5 tons.

The scientific name of this type of dolphin is Globicephala Macrohyncus. The term Globicephala refers to the roundness of its head. These dolphins food is mainly composed of cephalopods.
