Indus River dolphin

The Indus River dolphin is amongst one of the five river dolphins species. As most fresh water dolphins, this one has the name of the waterway in which its natural habitat, the Indus River. Its scientific name is Platanista minor.

This marine mammal is of smaller size compared to its saltwater cousins. Its length varies between 1,5 and 2,5 meters long while its weight ranges from 70 to 90kg.

Its diet mainly consists of fishes and shellfish. The main reason responsible for its limited natural habitat is the dams. It's physical appearance is quite similar to the Gange River dolphin. It is almost blind since its eyes have no lenses but it is not an issue for it as it lives in murky waters. It often swims on its side and its fin has a tactile purpose.
